You can resolve many display issues by updating the software on your Apple devices, cables, and adapters. If you're using a display, hub, extender, or adapter not made by Apple, check with the manufacturer for any updates that might be available. If you're using more than one display, and you can see the image on one of the displays, you can also use Displays preferences to check for connected displays. If there's no image on your display, try adjusting your display's brightness or contrast. If there's still no image, or the image appears torn or scrambled, try selecting a different video resolution in System Preferences. If your display works only when your Mac is started in safe mode, and you have display-related software installed, check with the software's developer for updates, or try temporarily uninstalling it.

Make sure your display resolution in System Preferences is set to its default. If you're using a resolution that's scaled, the image might be magnified to fit the display. This can cause the image to look blurry in some apps. Check your display for a "monitor mode" setting to get the best video quality. If an app you're using appears low resolution on your Retina display, check to see if an update to the app is available.

Most apps have been updated to use the higher pixel densities of Retina displays. Lower-resolution images on some web pages might also appear "softer" when viewed on a Retina display. This is because Retina displays have a higher pixel density and not all websites use Retina-ready images. For example, the images below look different when viewed on a Retina display, but the same on a non-Retina display. This happens because the Retina-ready image has a higher pixel density:.

The brightness setting on your TV actually has more to do with the "blackness" of the blacks than anything else. If the blacks are too dark, turn up the brightness. If the blacks are gray, the brightness needs to be turned down. Many TVs have a setting known as "color temperature".

When the entire picture has an undesirable yellowish cast or bluish cast mostly noticable in white areas of the pictureit may be because of the color temperature setting. What is perceived to be the "best" setting will actually be influenced by the kind of ambient light there is in the room.

Turn the display off and then on again. That may be all it needs to recognize the video feed and start displaying it correctly. If they do seem well secured, unplug and plug them in again just to be sure. You can also try using a new cable in case the old one has issues bent pins, a short, exposed wire, etc. Sometimes ports themselves can be damaged and switching to another is all you need to do to correct it.

Update your drivers — Windows 10 supports multiple monitors by default, but your current setup may not be configured correctly. If it does, consider running it as the primary display until you determine the root problem. Step 1: Right-click your desktop and select the Display Settings option on the resulting pop-up menu.

Unfortunately, most of that stuff requires either a certified repair or a complete replacement to fix. Even so, here are the most common ailments for modern LCD monitors, and what can be done to fix them…or not. It might be something as simple as a loose or faulty video cable. So first, tighten down the cable on both the monitor and the computer end making sure to completely tighten any retention screws, if your cable has them or simply replace the cable.

An incorrect refresh rate setting can also cause flickering. The refresh rate is the number of times the computer sends an image to the monitor per second, expressed in hertz. Unfortunately, most other flickering symptoms are caused by a power deficiency somewhere in the monitor itself.

A stuck pixel may be a different matter. Depending on exactly how the problem is manifesting, it might be possible to get the pixel back into working order. You could try to replace the LCD panel itself, but since the replacement part will be almost as expensive as a new monitor anyway, you might as well start shopping.

This design has been largely superseded by LED backlighting, but there are still plenty of CFL-equipped monitors in use. Buzzing can occur due to problems in power regulation to one or more bulbs. Try adjusting the brightness of your screen up or down to see if the noise dissipates; of course, this can be a less than optimal solution if you need your screen brightness at a specific setting.

Fortunately, a faulty CFL bulb is a fairly standard issue, as is a malfunctioning power regulator in various other components that can cause similar problems.

If your monitor is out of its warranty period, take it to a local electronics shop—they can probably swap out the part for considerably less than the cost of a new screen. If your screen is suddenly showing the wrong resolution for your desktop—which is indeed a pretty big deal for any PC user —the most likely culprit is your graphics card. Updating the driver usually fixes this problem, though a new graphics card might be in order.

Carefully check the casing of the monitor itself or the power adapter; if either is too hot to touch for more than a few seconds, they need to be replaced. That being said, the extra expense of a laptop versus a monitor might make it a much better candidate for a repair rather than a replacement.
