Well I finally managed to get my hands on a bulb that was on the correct firmware so finally I can show how to use the much easier Tuya-Convert method to flash your bulb! Tuya-Convert is a very easy method of flashing your esp based smart bulbs with custom firmware, so that you can remove the need for your IoT devices to speak to Chinese cloud servers and allows you to integrate with Home Assistant, OpenHAB or Domoticz.

Finally you might want to check out the compatibility list on the Tuya-Convert GitHub page where the community has kindly posted their results with certain bulbs. Firstly we need to be booted into our Linux environment.

Then open a terminal and issue the following commands:. This will install Git if not already included in your distro, then will download Tuya-Convert. The final step will update your distro and install the required package for Tuya-Convert to run. This can take a few minutes to complete depending on your hardware. Once both these steps are done, you can hit enter and wait. This can take a minute or two to complete.

Your device should stop flashing and the light should be on constant. Your terminal window should look similar to this which will indicate a success:.

Once done, you can then connect to the web page of your device to continue setup. Congratulations, you just successfully flashed your smart bulb or plug!

You have a ton of options now for integrations and are free to flash any firmware you desire! A backup of the original firmware is automatically saved so keep this safe incase you ever want to go back for some reason.

You will find it in the tuya-convert folder. The most common issue you will run into is that your device has a new firmware on it which prevents this procedure. You know if this is the case if when you start the flash procedure, your device exists pairing mode and stops flashing, but nothing happens in your terminal window.

Unfortunately the guys behind the tuya-convert project have been unable so far to get around this, hopefully they can in the future. Please consider creating an issue on github in order to help the community know which ones to avoid! Your only option at this point is to follow our other guide and solder directly. The other common issues are not joining a secondary device to the vtrust-flash SSID first, or not putting your device in pairing mode before pressing enter.

Make sure to follow these steps carefully! Worked great on my Geeni WW bulbs. I followed your clear instructions, but elas, no windows with actions and no WIFI AP visible, using a wifi scanner on my mobile. Please send me your e-mail adress, so I can send a screen dump and the log file.

Of course it is an ESP so you can use Tasmota or any other compatible firmware. Just make sure your strip and controller match, so same version of both. You might already have a power supply already, these are used for loads of things. Just make sure it is v DC. Firstly we need to open up our controller, this is done very easily by gently prising around the edges to split apart.

Once open, we can see we have an ESP controller inside:. Note you will see I have my IO0 connection not connected, this is because I am simply holding this to ground as I insert my USB, this is all that is required to enter flash mode.

Creating firmware is pretty straight forward. Paste the following into the file:. Indentation is important in these YAML files so be aware of that.

Once again, ensure your USB to serial adaptor is set to 3. Plug in one end of your USB connection with the other left out. Go ahead and grab your IO0 wire and hold it onto your ground connection. While doing that, plug the other end of the USB cable in. After a couple seconds you can let go of the IO0 to ground wire. Once done, you can then go ahead and run the following command which will instruct ESPHome to compile:.

Zemismart 6W A19 Bulb

This will take a minute or two to complete, at which point you will then be asked how you want to upload.

Select the option for serial and it should begin to upload. Now would be a great time to take it for a test spin! With everything disconnected from serial adaptor, you can now plug the DC power supply into the Magic Home. If done correctly, the LEDs should light up straight away, since we have set restore mode to always on.

If nothing happens, flip the LED strip connector around, its easy to put this in the wrong way round. With everything working correctly, we now just need to de-solder the wires from our board, this should be very straight forward. Re-fit the Magic Home into the plastic casing, make sure to get the orientation the right way round. Go ahead and connect everything again and test just to ensure. It is now ready for you to fit in its final position. If you have the discovery component setup in Home Assistant, it should show right up in your notifications!

After a little digging, I found that there are literally thousands of bulbs on Amazon. So where to start? Luckily, the vast majority of these bulbs come from a single vendor, Tuya, and are then rebranded. This means that they are all pretty much identical under the hood.

Inside of these bulbs is the ever popular esp, which, as you guessed, means we can modify it to suit our needs. This is by far the easier method. Unfortunately Tuya started rolling out patches for this sometime at the start of the year which prevents tuya-convert from working. Some bulbs are on this new firmware out of the box, some are not. My recommendation is to try tuya-convert first — and whatever you do, do not connect your light to the Smart Life app, this will automatically flash the bulb and Tuya-Convert will no longer be an option.

This guide assumes you have experience soldering and have access to soldering equipment. If you do not, please try the tuya-convert method mentioned above. If I can obtain a compatible device, I will write a guide using that method in the future. Now we have direct access to the PCB. If we look closely at the chip, we can confirm that the chip we are working with is indeed an esp We can then start identifying where we need to solder our wires. You need to identify the following points on the board:.

They should have markings on the PCB which identify these points:. Go ahead and carefully solder these connections, they are quite small and may require a bit of patience. One very important final step here, make sure you have the jumper on your USB to serial adapter set to 3. Before continuing, you read the paragraph above right? Please make sure you have your USB to serial adapter set to 3. Now proceed to plug your USB adapter into your laptop.

It should pick up that you have plugged something in. You will need to have python 2. Once you have python installed, run the following command in command prompt or terminal to install esptool:. To do this on Windows, right click the start menu and choose device manager.

It should bring up the device manager window. The screenshot below shows that mine is COM4.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

Unless your Tasmota powered device exhibits a problem or you need to make use of a feature that is not available in the Tasmota version currently installed on your device, leave your device alone - it works so don't make unnecessary changes! Note that there is a chance, as with any upgrade, that the device may not function as expected. You must always account for the possibility that you may need to flash the device via the serial programming interface if the OTA upgrade fails. Even with the master release, you should always attempt to test the device or a similar prototype before upgrading a device which is in production or is hard to reach.

And, as always, make a backup of the device configuration before beginning any firmware update.
