Of course, it's all how you sail the thing, right? Which case your going from a street car guessing trolley on rails here to a 30ft RV. As for OD - very good argument and value add for sure! The O30 is a fantastic light air boat for years and years it had a huge fleet in Seattle where light air boats are highly valued.
But I'm not very familiar with them regarding shared water experiences. Plenty of guys here that could give you some good feed back though. My experence has O30 and J92 rating within 9 sec of each other. If you are saying a J92 that rates 96 owes a O30 30sec a mile. I would tell you a moron could sail the o30 and win. Would I be a complete retard for fitting a sprit to an Olson 30? Someone did it with an Olson 40, but it hasn't been sailed yet so I don't know if it's a completely fucked idea or not.
I would go with a cruising Asymmetric kite tacked to the bow long before the trouble of adding a sprit to the boat.
The O30 is built for crew so if your thinking solo or short handed like double or three up the O30 will challenge you. It can be done but it would take practice and time to really get good sailing the O30 short handed - not a bad thing just the simple truth that the O30 is a pretty nice machine with very good light air performance vs the Jboat's which are easily short handed but not as light air capable.
Just the nature of the beast. Keep in mind the O30 will have a couple of head sails to choose from and manage vs the J's essentially have 1 head sail. I know of a O29 that did well with a sprit, never seen a 30 with one.
I know you are thinking a sprit will make fordeck so much easier, but the truth is you can have fuck up with a sprit just like a pole. Add that to the fact that you are in a light wind area where most likely you won't be running guys that make the pole very easy even for a noob. Or fuck it put a pole on the bitch and see what happens! There was a seriously modified O30 in the classified awhile back don't know if it sold may be a good platform for adding more stuff.
Olsons are kick ass, don't get me wrongIf you need a boat, we are here to help you find it, submit an offer, and ensure a quick, secure, and hassle-free transaction.
Have Questions? Designed to be handled entirely from the cockpit, one can even fly a gennaker from the end of a retractable carbon bowsprit that extends six feet out in front of the bow. The interior, though spartan is relatively spacious, overnights are possible if caught away from home port, the reliable Yanmar engine and sail drive will get you home if impossibly becalmed, but most of the time you will be flying across the water, doubtless racing others and not even thinking about such things.
But of course none of this should be news to the likely buyer of such a vessel, because this boat is extremely well known to the community as are all J Boats designs, so take a look at all the photos, read the reviews on the web if you have not already been doing for years, then make your move.
Both boat and trailer regularly and extremely well maintained by her original owner this package is about as good as it gets. Restored in and raced lightly since. All gelcoat, no paint. In the water only 3 weeks in Spring, 4 weeks in Fall since restoration.

Jibing is a snap from the cockpit with nobody on the foredeck. Simply let out one sheet and pull in the other. The tack remains attached to the sprit at all times. This new concept of high performance sailboat is more than just a racer or cruiser. Is there a grace to the look of the boat that is captivating? How easy and how much fun is it to sail with family and friends?
Running backstays, spinnaker pole, pole lift, foreguy, afterguys, grinders, tailers,…. Imagine sailing in the s alongside 11 crew members, with a sail inventory on an IOR racer that cost roughly nine times more to campaign than its owner could either afford or wanted to spend. Weighing eight tons too much for its size, this lead-sled begins to shake and groan as its speedo struggles to hit seven-and-a-half knots.
Everyone onboard has only a single reason to be out on the water—to sail fast and have fun. With a deep 5ft 9in.

Even sitting on a cradle indoors while the snow swirled about outside, the 92 looked like it was moving upwind at six-and-a-half knots! Johnstone mentioned that when he sat down to design the Decimetre boats, with objectives of creating fast, easy-to-handle sportboats that would encourage family participation in either One Design of PHRF Fleets. If anything, this boat creates the intimidating impression that it has been built for flat-out racing during Key West Race Week.
So as to not discriminate against light crews, the 92 class rules specify a maximum crew weight of lbs. Under this rule, a smallish crew a family perhaps? Apart from its high righting moment, the 92 has many other features that make it attractive to a broad spectrum of sailors—from families to so-called factory teams. Yet, without a conventional spinnaker pole and its tangled array of topping lifts, downhauls, lazy-sheets and guys, gybing is a breeze. All you need to do is let out on the old sheet, turn the boat and trim in the new sheet on the opposite winch.
Only the Trip 26 and the Carrera come close to the performance of this J in the under ft range. American handicappers have come to the conclusion that the A-chute A for asymmetricaland bowsprit configuration does not broad reach or go downwind as well as a conventional symmetrical spinnaker with a squared pole.
The A-sail is rated as slightly slower than a conventional kite.Calculations Help. It provides a reasonable comparison between yachts of similar type.
It is based on the fact that the faster the motion the more upsetting it is to the average person. Consider, though, that the typical summertime coastal cruiser will rarely encounter the wind and seas that an ocean going yacht will meet. Numbers below 20 indicate a lightweight racing boat; 20 to 30 indicates a coastal cruiser; 30 to 40 indicates a moderate bluewater cruising boat; 40 to 50 indicates a heavy bluewater boat; over 50 indicates an extremely heavy bluewater boat.
The CSF compares beam with displacement since excess beam contributes to capsize and heavy displacement reduces capsize vulnerability. The boat is better suited for ocean passages vs coastal cruising if the result of the calculation is 2. The lower the better. Under 2 - Slow, under powered. Sailboat Rigging Diagram.
